Waxing remains one of the most reliable ways to achieve weeks of smooth, hair-free skin. To ensure you get the best outcome and minimize any discomfort, it’s important to pay attention to preparation and aftercare, not just the treatment itself.

Before Your Waxing Appointment

1. Avoid Exfoliating on Waxing Day

Exfoliating can benefit your skin by removing dead cells, but doing so on the same day as waxing may make your skin extra sensitive. Since waxing also removes the outer skin layer along with hair, exfoliating right before can result in irritation or redness.

Instead, exfoliate two to three days before your appointment. This helps limit ingrown hairs without causing sensitivity during waxing.

2. Grow Your Hair to the Right Length

Wax binds best to hair that is at least a quarter inch long—approximately the size of a grain of rice. If the hair is too short, waxing may be less effective. If it’s too long, you may experience more discomfort.

Refrain from shaving for two to three weeks to let your hair reach the ideal length for waxing.

3. Don’t Use Lotions or Oils on the Day

Moisturizers and oils can create a layer on your skin, making it difficult for wax to adhere properly. Clean, dry skin leads to optimal waxing results.

Take a shower prior to your session, but skip applying creams, oils, or heavy products on the area to be waxed.

4. Opt for Comfortable Clothing

Right after waxing, tight clothing can aggravate your skin. Loose, breathable garments help your skin recover more comfortably post-treatment.

Choose soft, loose-fitting attire—particularly for leg, underarm, or bikini waxes.

After Your Waxing Appointment

1. Moisturize Using Gentle Products

Your freshly waxed skin will benefit from gentle hydration. Stick with fragrance-free lotions to minimize irritation. Soothing options like aloe gel are a good choice.

Stay away from products containing alcohol, strong fragrances, or harsh chemicals, as these may worsen irritation.

2. Limit Sun Exposure

Recently waxed skin is much more sensitive to sunlight. UV rays can cause burning and even lead to dark spots or uneven tone on treated areas.

Keep out of direct sun for at least one to two days after waxing. If you need to be outdoors, always use sunscreen on those areas.

3. Stay Away from Heat and Chlorine

Hot showers, saunas, and pools can all contribute to irritation after waxing. Heat opens pores which may increase sensitivity; chlorine can also make skin feel dry or uncomfortable.

Use lukewarm water for showers during the first 24 hours and avoid hot tubs, saunas, and pool use during this period.

4. Don’t Touch or Scratch the Area

Some sensitivity is normal, but picking or scratching the skin can introduce bacteria, raising the risk of breakouts or infection.

Let your skin heal naturally. If you feel discomfort, choose a mild soothing lotion or aloe gel.

5. Exfoliate a Few Days Later

Once your skin has calmed, gentle exfoliation helps prevent ingrown hairs by clearing dead skin cells that might trap new growth.

Wait two to three days before exfoliating with a soft scrub or glove, and then do so two to three times per week.
